Feel more grounded

Have you ever felt a little offbeat, your mind on fast forward and you cant seem to find the calmness your body is needing? It could be a sign to hit the pause button and take a some quiet time and ground yourself.

Grounding is a powerful technique that can be a wonderful life tool when you need to feel more connected and rooted in your body. It is for the times when you may be feeling a little anxious, nervous, spacey, overwhelmed or in your head with too many thoughts roaming around. Those are all tell-tale signs you may need to slow down. It is important to remember who you are. That we are part of nature, we are light, we are energy source and we are beautiful souls living in a human body.

I made a list below sharing a few different ways that I personally follow in my own life -- to help feel more at peace in my body.

Grounding: means to be completely in your body, rooted to source, fully aware and connected to the present moment.

THE BODY SCAN

Lay down or cross your legs while sitting comfortably on the ground. Take notice to your body. Scan consciously from head to toe and see where you feel tension, pain or anxiety. Maybe you are furrowing your brows which is causing tension in your head, are you clenching your jaw, your stomach is in knots, neck and shoulders feel tight. Sometimes you may not even realize you are holding tension at all until you try the body scan, you may be surprised. Whatever it may be, notice where the tension is. Bring presence and focus to the area. Breathe in slowly and deeply into the area that is tense. Exhale and let the feeling pass by.

WALK BAREFOOT OUSIDE

This is one of the most soothing and healing ways to feel instantly grounded. Next time you are outside (depending on the season) remove your shoes and step barefoot into the ground and feel the energy of mother earth connecting to you. Stepping barefoot into the ground is my absolute favorite way to feel more connected. Try this on the grass, sand, dirt and rocks. This will help bring you back into the present moment and connecting you back to source.

FOOD TO EAT

According to ayurveda practices, some food can help you feel more grounded, focused and rooted. Especially the ones that grow deep within the earth. Here are a few to add to your cooking.

  • beets

  • carrots

  • garlic

  • pumpkin

  • squash

  • sweet potatoes

  • onions

  • parsnips

  • radishes

DO SOMETHING ROUTINE

Having small routines in your day can help you to feel grounded since it will bring familiarity into your daily routine which can really help anxious feelings slip away. For example: Brewing yourself a cup of coffee or tea at the same time each morning, walk your dog at a certain time, listen to calming music while you work or even having a nightly face washing routine that you look forward to…etc

ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are incredible for assisting at helping you to feel more grounded, calm and rooted. Especially oils that are derived from trees. A few tree essential oils to try: cedarwood, sandalwood, arborvitae, douglas fir, black spruce, frankincense. I use Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils from doTERRA.

YOGA

Yoga is one of my favorite ways to help bring you back into your body and rooted to the earth. Practice these grounding poses any time you feel like you need to regroup when you need to slow down. Standing poses are the best for grounding yourself. When standing in a pose, become aware of the entire surface of the soles of the feet, focus on slow deep breathing and feel the energy connecting from the earth to your body.

A few poses to try: Tree pose, downward dog, child’s pose, tadasana( mountain pose), chair pose (utkatasana)

PRACTICE MEDITATION

Meditation is a powerful tool to calm your mind and bring your busy thoughts down to your heart center. If you are new to meditation I am going to share a couple that can get you started. The I AM meditation is a true favorite. Turn off your cellphone and any distracting noise around you. Gently close your eyes and take a few slow, deep breaths. You can choose to plant your feet flat on the ground or sit where ever you feel most comfortable, while relaxing every muscle in your body.
